The Best Kids' Books About Fall: Our Seasonal Reading List

Embrace the new season with our family's favorite fall books. These stories are full of beautiful illustrations, life lessons, and rhyming tales perfect for cuddling up to read together.

I love celebrating the change in seasons with my kids so they can feel the rhythms of life. As the days get shorter and the air gets chillier, we have more time for cuddling up to read together. Here’s a list of what's on our shelf to welcome autumn, with each book offering a unique way to celebrate the season.

Beautiful Stories About Nature and Kindness

The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry:

This is one of my favorite children’s books of all time. It's a tender story of a scarecrow who saves a baby crow, bringing to life the powerful themes of friendship and compassion.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak:

This book is filled with beautiful illustrations and a sweet story that gives parents the perfect chance to invent voices for 11 different elements of nature!

Lila and the Crow by Gabrielle Grimard:

Set in stunning fall watercolors, this book ignited an empathetic conversation about bullying and how our differences are truly our strengths.

Fun Tales with Lessons to Learn

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara:

A fall-favorite fruit, the pumpkin, introduces our kids to counting by twos, fives, and tens. The story also teaches a wonderful lesson that smaller doesn't mean lesser than.

The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming:

You can't think of a more entertaining way to learn about how trees change in the fall than through Squirrel’s wildly dramatic response to it. The book also provides a great lesson on adapting to change.

Acorn Was a Little Wild by Jen Arena:

Acorn is a thrill-seeker with a passion for adventure. This is a delightful read-aloud about a little acorn who learns to embrace life's challenges and the exciting journey of change and growth.

Books That Celebrate Work and Family

Sleep Tight Farm by Eugenie Doyle:

As urban dwellers in a climate with minimal seasonal change, this book transports us to another way of life, showing how a farm prepares for winter, from spring's new growth to fall's bounty and winter's rest.

Construction Site: Farming Strong, All Year Long by Sherri Duskey Rinker:

While technically this book covers all the seasons, Sherri always makes the most readable rhymes with plenty of trucks—which is a big win in our house. It also teaches important lessons about teamwork and collaboration.
