DIY Olympic Medals: Go for the Gold!
We watched a marathon of Olympic sports yesterday, and after a little too much screen time, we needed a way to keep our energy and creativity up. So, we made up this craft and some games in the yard. It was super simple, and the kids loved it so much they ended up making them all day long, including some awards for family and friends. Proud gold medalist of the world’s best mom right here! 🤸♂️
Passing along this little trick to keep in your back pocket for a day when you need it:
Materials You’ll Need
Paper
Round objects to trace for the medal and rings (We used a Calamine lotion bottle because it was sitting right there, proving that everything is an art tool if you’re creative enough!)
Scissors
Hole punch
Markers
String
Step-by-Step Instructions
Trace and Cut: Trace a large circle for the medal shape and cut it out.
Add the Rings: Trace five rings in the center of the medal.
Hole Punch: Use the hole punch to create a hole at the top of the medal.
Decorate! Give the medal to your kiddo to decorate with markers. This is where their creativity can really shine!
Tie the String: Loop a piece of string through the hole and tie the ends together.
Play and Award: Host your own Olympic games in the backyard or living room and present the medals to your champions!
Tips for Success
Embrace the Imperfect: Don’t worry about perfect circles or lines. The hand-drawn look adds to the charm!
Get Creative with Supplies: Look around your house for objects to trace. A cup, a small bowl, or even the cap of a jar will work perfectly.
Expand the Fun: Encourage your kids to create different types of medals for different "events"—like a "Best Listener" medal or a "Fastest Room Cleaner" award.
Keep the Conversation Going: While they're decorating, talk about the different Olympic sports you watched. Ask them which ones they'd like to try and what it takes to be a great athlete.
This easy craft turned a day of screen time into a day of creative play and connection. I hope you and your family have fun creating your own awards!
